National River Flow Archive (NRFA) researchers will be taking part in the European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2024 (EGU24) from April 15-19 at the Austria Center, Vienna. This year, Cath Sefton and Steve Turner will be attending and will take the opportunity to present a poster on the NRFA Peak Flows Dataset.
The poster describes the collaborative programme of work undertaken by the four main Measuring Authorities (MAs) and the NRFA which is based at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH). It provides details about the process of acquiring the data including the quality control checks, and the steps required leading to the data being released. This partnership and the channelling of peak flow data for the UK through one organisation also promotes sharing of best practice. The poster also looks at the remaining challenges and improvements that could be made to the provision of peak flow data in the UK, which include event independence, concerned with the criteria used to derive peaks-over-threshold data, consolidation of stage-discharge ratings between the MAs and UKCEH, further digitisation of pre-digital data where physical charts exist, and the quantification and communication of uncertainty in high flow measurement.
You can follow along with conference proceedings with #EGU24 and @UK_NRFA on Twitter/X.
The poster will be presented in Session HS4.6: Transforming observations and forecasts for management and policy action - the role of data services for the water related sectors on poster board A.61, on Tuesday, 16 Apr, 10:45–12:30 CET (09:45-11:30 BST).
Whilst at EGU, NRFA staff will also be presenting work on Chalk Bournes, and the ROBIN project amongst other things.
If you are attending in person, we look forward to seeing you!
