A paper authored by Katie Muchan, Jamie Hannaford and Simon Parry of the NRFA, in collaboration with Melinda Lewis at the British Geology Survey has been published in a special issue of Weather, one year on from the 2013/2014 winter floods.
The defining aspect of the winter was the occurrence of multiple types of flooding. The paper reviews the inland flooding, which included prolonged river flooding – notably on the Somerset Levels and in the Thames Valley – and exceptionally high groundwater levels in many areas. The paper also looks into the impacts of the stormy winter and puts the event into a historical context.
